wikipedia strikes again

from Wikipedia: and for the purposes of accuracy after Tuesday's class.

Foucault enthusiastically participated in the gay culture in San Francisco, particularly in the S&M culture - it is suspected that it was here that he contracted HIV, in the days before the disease was described as such. Foucault died of an AIDS-related illness in Paris in 1984.

Ha! Thanks so much for clearing that up for me.

Foucault was also a post-modernist--influenced by German philosophy, Marxism, Structuralism...
Side note: He believed that the history of the world is the history of sexual oppression.

Foucault's main point was that society functions by adopting discourses; ideas that are generated therefore transform society--create progress.

He believes that everyone in society presents things as the "Truth," however there is no real truth, people just compete to establish it. This is similar to [Kenneth] Burkean Theory of identification--general understanding is possible, but never complete.

In reference to chapter 12--the last section states:

"But no method or rule of interpretation, either singly or in combination with others, offers much hope of attaining final constitutional truth...."

The connection makes sense to me...
(Liberal Arts is either benefiting or hindering my intellectual integrity.)

That is an excellent quote from MPEK: that is the whole point of their thesis, "politics as choice."
